This course focuses on five central themes in American culture and the arts: symbols of freedom, landscape and space, families, changes in urban areas, and graffiti to include murals and street art. These themes will direct a variety of perspectives on the changing attitudes reflected in art and culture from the colonial through the modern era.

Margery Gordon is an artist/educator who worked at Smithsonian’s American Art Museum (SAAM) and National Museum of Natural History (NMNH). She taught at Howard University, Corcoran, American University’s Olli, and Assumption University’s Wise Program. Margery was highlighted in Museum People, and written up in the Worcester Telegram and Gazette, Washington and Denver Posts, and Smithsonian publications. Her permanent artworks are in the National Cancer and Dayton Art Institutes.
