Most songs convey a feeling – be it love, hate, sorrow, or some other human emotion. Other songs take a strong point of view, such as protesting war, economic discrimination, or environmental destruction. Then there are songs that tell a story. These “story songs,” also referred to as “lyric songs,” have a long history, going back to epic poems such as The Odyssey and later tales told by traveling minstrels. Today, many great song writers such as Harry Chapin, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and others have written memorable songs that tell a story. These songs often draw you in much more than traditional songs. In this course, you will experience many of the great story songs written by contemporary song writers and performers.
