The Covid-19 pandemic has upended life around the globe with tragic consequences. Fortunately, the scientific community responded quickly with investigations that have provided unprecedented insights into coronaviruses, human immune responses, and effective therapeutics. The course will begin with a discussion of the viral infection cycle. Understanding the viral cycle is guiding the development of new therapeutics. We'll then discuss the immune responses to infection, including antibodies and inflammation. We'll also discuss Covid vaccines, with special emphasis on the novel mRNA vaccines. Finally, we'll look forward to the prospect of controlling an endemic virus and preparing for emerging pathogens.
