From the pens and computers of Horace Walpole, Mary Shelley, Shirley Jackson, Stephen King (among others) have come Gothic tales that have striking visual expression on the big screen. Join us as we meet male and female characters who are imperiled and imprisoned within edifices and emotions from wild British moors, to haunted castles and crumbling abbeys, to the American heartland and beyond. We will view and critique three such films and learn about many others, while surveying actors and directors whose accomplishments within this surprisingly multi-faceted genre endure.

Jeff Long has offered film studies courses at WISE since 2014 and has been writing movie reviews for the Worcester Telegram & Gazette since 2008.  He also taught film studies courses at Becker College and is the author of the reading guide Remembered Childhoods (2007).
