This course will look at the development of the American railroad system from its initial development in the 1830’s to the present. We will also speculate on the future of the railway system for the movement of freight and passengers. Topics for the course include: the initial ride using horses and steam, the Civil War and the Transcontinental Railway, monopoly and regulation, WWII to the Interstate, the 707 Jet liner, the slow speed rail and the end of coal.
Dr. Jed Watters is a former Assumption College history professor and retired naval officer.
