New England was already populated when the Europeans arrived.  This course will explore the different approaches to the natives taken by various European settlers and the wars which resulted.  In the five weeks, we will examine the arrival and early relations of the Pilgrims and the Puritans, the causes and aftermath of the Pequot War, “King” Philip’s War, the struggles of Rhode Island, and the French and Indian War.

Dr. John Ferriss retired from the University of Massachusetts Medical School in 2011.  He is a long-time history enthusiast and a railroad/train buff.  He completed a Master of Arts degree in Military History from Norwich University in Vermont.
