This is an additional offering of A6. French Impressionism. Please do not register for both offerings. WISE members who were on the waitlist for A6 have priority in registering for this offering.

The avant-garde French artists of the late 19th century, known as Impressionists, created changes in style, subject matter, and even the marketing of works of art.  We’ll explore the eight Impressionist exhibitions as well as the stylistic development and differences amongst the Impressionists in the 1860’s, 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, looking at works by Monet, Renoir, Degas, Pissarro, Morisot, and Cassatt among others.  The impact of the Impressionists on American artists will be illustrated in the paintings of artists such as Robinson, Hassam, Twachtman, and Benson.

Martha Chiarchiaro has brought history to life through the art of the times for more than 30 years. She received her Master’s degree in the History of Art from Williams College and has taught a variety of art history courses at the Worcester Art Museum and Worcester State University. Martha has provided numerous talks on American painting, with a special fondness for American landscapes painters.
