NOTE SPECIAL STARTING TIME FOR THESE CLASSES

The Chain of Being will be explained and then related to Shakespeare’s histories and tragedies.  We shall address the question of whether Shakespeare anticipated 20th century Existentialism, which certainly does not believe in a Chain of Being.  When the Chain of Being is broken in Macbeth, Hamlet and King Lear, chaos reigns but order and peace return at the end.  The sun will shine again in Scotland.

GROUP LEADER:  Stephen White taught English for many years at Bancroft School in Worcester and has taught WISE classes for several years.

REQUIRED BOOKS: Any copies of Hamlet, Macbeth, and King Lear.

Read Hamlet before the first class.
