This course is designed to assist you in making your visit to an art museum a more meaningful experience. The best experience is an interactive one and this interaction has three major components: you, the art, and the Museum. This course provides basic information, the terminology, and the ‘tools’ to help you interpret the art and understand the multiple roles and messages of the art and the Museum as well as some of the challenges facing art museums today.

GROUP LEADER:  Dr. Barbara Beall-Fofana is a Professor Emerita of Art History and former Chair of the Department of Art, Music & Theater at Assumption College. As a Visiting Professor at Clark University she currently teaches African as well as Islamic Art & Architecture. Her publications in art history include Understanding the Art Museum.

REQUIRED READING:  Understanding the Art Museum by Barbara A Beall-Fofana.
